OUR CO-OP AND REQUIREMENTS
PROGRAM
Young'uns Summer Cooperative provides organized play and educational programs for children between 18 months to 3.5 years of age**. It is a parent-led organization with two parents and one full-time, paid staff on duty each day. Our goal is to help foster learning through interacting with other children of their own age. We focus on the whole child—educational, social, emotional, and physical developments--as s/he gains greater self-awareness and place in the world.
**Children outside the age range may be accepted with permission.
PARENT PARTICIPATION
An important component to our summer cooperative is parent participation. We strongly believe that our children's development benefits from parent engagement in the classroom. As a cooperative, parent participation also helps keep tuition affordable for all.
Typically, parents work one shift per week and is responsible for bringing healthy snacks or organizing an activity. If a parent is unable to serve duty, a nanny or another caregiver may serve duty on the parent's behalf. In addition, because many families travel and go on vacations during the summer, parents may group their duty days. For instance, parents may frontload (or backload) all their duty days to the start (or end) of the summer so that they do not have to worry about them for the rest of the summer term.
All parents and other caregivers must pass a criminal background check prior to serving his/her duty day.
CLASS HOURS
Classes are held five days a week, Mondays thru Friday, from 9 AM to 3 PM at our classrooms at Macomb and Hamilton Recreation Centers.
2020 START AND END DATES
Monday, June 22, 2020 to Friday, August 21, 2020
We follow the District of Columbia's public school calendar. When they finish their year in June, we start our summer session immediately thereafter and continue to the week before public schools resume in August.
CLASS SIZE
13 children per location
AGE REQUIREMENTS
Children should be between 1.5 to 3.5 years by June 22, 2020. However, children who fall outside this age range may be considered with permission.
DIAPERS AND POTTY TRAINING
For younger children (closer to 18 months), there is no potty training requirement. For older children (closer to 3.5 years), they should be in the process of potty training or fully trained. They must come to co-op in pull-ups or underwear. Parents/caregivers on duty will help with diaper changes.
PRIVATE LESSONS
At the cooperative, early learning educators in music, dance, STEM craft, and other age-appropriate activities provide supplemental learning opportunities. The supplemental lessons vary depending on the session and location. Two to three private lessons per week will be provided at each site.
LUNCH
